How to choose your yoga mat?

Finding YOUR yoga mat that is adapted to YOUR practice is essential whether you are a beginner or an advanced practitioner. The main difficulty is to find the mat that is really non-slip for you! For your yoga mat to bring you satisfaction, the criteria of aesthetics, color and design should not be the first. Unless you practice Iyengar yoga where alignments are very important, the choice of a yoga mat with postural lines is highly recommended. To help you in your choice, you can filter your yoga mat from the following criteria:

The 3 essential selection criteria for a yoga mat

  • Material
Whoever will tell you that the material is not important has never done yoga! The material of your yoga mat offers you different sensations to the touch. I try to describe each item as well as possible to give you the best feeling. The most non-slip material is rubber because the weight will allow your mat to roll completely across the floor without making ripples. Whether you practice on a parquet or tile floor, your rubber mat will not move. There are smooth rubber mats with no roughness like Infinity and honeycomb rubber mats like EKO that really grip.
  • Adhesion
It is this essential criterion which will determine if you will slip on your yoga mat. Choose your mat according to the nature of your skin. If your hands are sweaty and easily damp, choose a cork yoga mat or a mat combining microfiber and rubber. If you have very dry skin and need to moisturize a lot: the rubber mat is for you! If you don't have dry skin or sweaty hands, the PVC mat will do just fine!
  • Thickness of the mat
I suggest a range of yoga mats of 1.5 mm with the foldable mat for travel,
yoga mat 3.5 mm for the Combo range of Yoga Design Lab, yoga mat 4 mm for the range of yoga mats for children and EKO-lite Manduka, yoga mat 5 mm with Lotuscrafts yoga mats, the range PROlite Manduka and Infinity Yoga Design Lab, yoga mat 6 mm with the range PURE YDL
The thickness of your mat will determine the comfort
If you are looking for a thicker mat, it is no longer a yoga mat but a pilates mat

Additional selection criteria

  • Length of the mat
Most models are the standard 1.80 m long. But for children, small people or very tall people, this is not ideal. So I thought of you and you will find yoga mats for children  or extra long mat.. Use the search filter to select the length you need
  • Width of the mat
If you are a yoga nidra practitioner for example, you will appreciate a wider mat. I have selected the wool yoga mat and the Mudra Extra Large mat for those who want to be more comfortable
  • Comfort
The density of your mat will give you firmness or softness. Personally, I don't like to sink into my mat in the mountain posture (Tadasana) so I choose it rather firm, but everyone has his own desires.
  • Weight
The lightest mat is meant for travel for about 0.900 gr to 1 kg and the heaviest mat can reach up to 3 kg. Again, each yogi chooses according to his need, but I find that the weight of a 3 kg mat should not be the main brake! Obviously, if you have to fly, a light mat will be more suitable. Indeed, I myself have a mat that weighs a lot and that doesn't prevent me from carrying it everywhere thanks to a yoga mat bag
  • Label
Giving importance to the design of your mat is an important factor in your choice. All the yoga mats I offer are nature-friendly because none of them contain phthalates or materials that are toxic to humans and nature. Some are certified OEKO-TEX which also guarantees a mode of production respectful of the chain of manufacture
  • Use and frequency of use
Finally, most of my mats are designed for beginners as well as professionals. The more you practice, the more your level of requirement rises. So buying a first price yoga mat is a way to test if you like yoga. For me, the Lotuscrafts line fits this bill. Once you are sure you like yoga, I suggest you invest in the best yoga mat on the market from Manduka or Yoga Design Lab.

Carrying your mat, yes or no?

Generally, when you practice in a yoga studio, the mat is provided to you as well as cleaning sprays to clean it before and after use. In association or private classes, the yoga mat is not necessarily provided and you must equip yourself. Using your own yoga mat is like having your own toothbrush. I guess you don't lend or use someone else's toothbrush. For me, the mat is the same! You read it, if you've made it this far, the yoga mat is a choice for YOU. So having your own personal yoga gear is also about hygiene.

Now that we have that out of the way, it's time to transport your mat. Here again, I am often asked for carrying straps. Convenient for short trips, the mat carrying strap comes with the Yoga Design Lab line of mats. If you practice Iyengar yoga for example, you will need to carry your yoga accessories such as yoga blocks, straps, socks or for hip and pelvis support a yoga cushion for meditation. I recommend a large gym bag with hangers for your yoga mat. The DEHA bags are designed for this. In addition, you can also add your women's yoga pilates outfit or a men's yoga outfit because of their large capacity.
