The meditation yoga cushion is mainly used for sitting and meditation postures but not only! What shape of yoga cushion to choose according to its position and its anatomy?

  • Sitting on the ground in cross-legged, this position is adapted to certain morphologies more than to others. To be well sat in cross-legged and to remain there without tension and without risk, it is necessary :
    - have a good flexion of the groin to antevert the pelvis,
    - not to have ligamentary or articular lesions at the level of the hips, knees and ankles,
    - to have a length of bust such that the elbows rest naturally on the knees, ensuring the rectitude of the back, without tension.

    If you don't have hip flexion, usually men who are rather stiff, the cross-legged position will not be comfortable and naturally, your lower back will round out by bending forward and bringing the shoulders down to the floor. In this case, it is necessary to arrange your seat by placing a round zafu yoga cushion rather high. The latter is made according to ancestral methods. In any case, take care that your knees do not touch the ground and are at the good height on each side of your sitting in cross-legged: if, only one of your knees rests in the vacuum, you damage knees and hips. Knees should be at the same height on each side.
  • Sitting on the floor in half-lotus, this position is really comfortable for people who have a good flexibility of the pelvis. The half-moon yoga cushion is particularly comfortable because it will allow the pelvis to tilt naturally forward and unlike sitting cross-legged, the knees rest on the ground.

  • Sitting on the floor African style, this posture is spontaneous and natural with the back straight and both legs stretched forward. For this sitting, I recommend the small round yoga cushion. This one has also the advantage to slide under the knees if you have the problem of a shift of knee as indicated above or under the buttock in certain postures as the pigeon.

  • Sitting Asian style on the heels, the risk is to block the blood circulation in the lower limbs or to pass the weight of the body sometimes to the right, sometimes to the left. The meditation bench is absolutely perfect for this position, as you can relieve the knees and ankles while staying in the posture for a long time. The large yoga bolster can also be used for this sitting but it too has the advantage of being versatile.

To hold your sitting postures for a long time, if you meditate for long hours as for the Zen practice, the zabuton is a thick square that will isolate you from the cold and will bring you a lot of comfort.

What is the purpose of the yoga bolster?

The yoga bolster but can present various forms:
- the round bolster is mainly in spelt
- the flat bolster is filled with kapok and even if the big model is voluminous, it remains almost as light as the small flat bolster.
My bolsters are all removable and washable.

Very much used in Yin Yoga, the bolster allows to relax or to correct postures. It is also a cushion adopted by many mothers-to-be for pre-natal and post-natal yoga to relieve the back.

Lying on your back in the length of your bolster, you will be able to progress in the opening of the rib cage and the shoulders gently. Lying on your stomach in the length of your cushion, you will enjoy the relaxation that this position provides. Positioned under the legs in the direction of the width, it will relieve the feeling of heaviness. Many other variations are possible with a yoga bolster.
