Easy to recognize but difficult to define, modern jazz dance has its origins in North America
Modern jazz dance, queen of musicals
Like certain urban dances such as ragga dance-hall, modern jazz is a dance with African origins in a Western culture. At the end of 1800, beginning of 1900, Afro-American dance and jazz made common cause. The whites appropriate this dance to make it a stage dance and it is the cabbage of the musicals. You will also recognize this dance thanks to the typical costume like the jazz pants, iconic but still trendy.
Stage Dress, Costume vs. Dancewear for Class
Simply put, all styles of clothing can be worn on stage as well as in class. This is the freedom of dress in modern jazz. The main difference will be the play of materials:
- For your dance class, you will wear matte textiles such as cottons, viscose or matte lycras
- For the show, the textiles should reflect the light. We will rather go for shiny or rhinestone lycras that will shine and sparkle under the spotlights.
For the contemporary style of modern dance, the Women's Unitards for modern dance, jazz always trendy, is revisited and is shown as much on stage as in the dance studio.
In public as well as backstage, the dancer will appreciate a dance bra with original cuts but also an invisible fleshy underwear under a tank top and t-shirt for dance, whether it is loose, long or short. White, black and flesh dance shorts are essential in the dancer's wardrobe:
- black for movements on the floor, accompanied by dance kneepads
- flesh to slip under the dance dress or the short tunic
- white for the final visual effect in front of a black curtain!

Take special care in choosing your modern jazz shoes: whether you prefer jazz boots, shoes with or without laces, the heel is always a must. A jazz shoe ideally has a one centimeter high heel for your weekly work in the studio and the heel gets longer for the stage. For floor work and the very modern side with the effects of falling, gravity, body weight, contact with the floor, thong foot glowes as well as TOESOX or Blochsox dance socks are particularly suitable.
The warm-up garment offers the fashionable side of dance while providing protection against multiple injuries of the dancer.
